Published on May 17, 2020, a work trip to Tanzania introduced me to the delightful tree tomato, also known as tunda la damu in Kiswahili. The name, which translates to 'bloody fruit,' is a testament to its vibrant red color and unique taste.

During breakfast, I was served a beautifully displayed breakfast buffet featuring halved tree tomatoes. I couldn't resist snatching a couple to enjoy with my coffee. The waitress's question, 'Umeipendaje hilo Tunda la Damu?' (How do you like the bloody fruit?), left me amused and curious about the fruit's name.

Tree tomatoes are shaped like roma tomatoes, with a sweet and tangy taste. When cut in half, it's easy to scoop out the fruit's meat. This nutritious fruit is associated with several health benefits, including cancer prevention, managing diabetes, improving eyesight, and boosting body metabolism.

Tree tomatoes are widely available in most fruit and vegetable markets, with prices ranging from Sh50 for six fruits to Sh200 per kilo. Many hawkers and roadside fruit vendors also stock them, making it easy to incorporate this nutritious fruit into your diet.
