Published on May 17, 2020, a tragic incident occurred in Siaya County when a speedboat capsized in the swollen River Nzoia, resulting in the deaths of five men.
The accident happened around 1pm at Sango/Asere village, near Ugunja Town, on the border with Ugunja sub-county. According to Deputy County Commissioner Joseph Sawe, the nine youths had taken a ride across the river when their speedboat was overwhelmed by the strong water currents and capsized.
Mr. Sawe confirmed that five people had drowned and praised the four survivors for their lucky escape, given the speed of the water. He added that one of the survivors did not know how to swim but managed to grab a life jacket from the boat, which helped him stay afloat until he was rescued.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, but sources suggest that the accident may have been preventable. The owner of the boat had allowed a group of boda boda riders from Rabar Market to use the vessel, despite concerns from villagers.
The incident highlights the risks associated with reckless behavior on water and the importance of adhering to safety guidelines. The search for the bodies of the five victims is ongoing, with fears that they may have been swept into Lake Victoria.
