On May 16, 2020, Tanzania's President John Pombe Magufuli made a surprise move by sacking Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, the deputy minister for Health, and appointing Dr. Godwin Mollel as his replacement.
Dr. Ndugulile, a 51-year-old microbiologist and public health advocate, had served in the ministry for about three years, assuming the post in 2017 when President Magufuli reshuffled his Cabinet.
The changes at the ministry come at a time when the Covid-19 pandemic is ravaging the country, with all eyes trained on the Health ministry.
Dr. Mollel, the new deputy minister, is a medical doctor with a degree from Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences and is also the MP for Siha Constituency.
