On May 16, 2020, the German Bundesliga resumed play behind closed doors, marking a significant step in the return of football in Europe amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The league's strict health protocols aimed to minimize the risk of infection, with only 300 people in attendance at each match, including players, staff, team officials, broadcasters, and security personnel.

Players and staff were required to wear masks, while social distancing measures were implemented, including the use of airport stairs for substitutes and the disinfection of balls before each match.

Security officers were stationed outside the stadiums to prevent fans from accessing the grounds or gathering to celebrate.

Inside the stadiums, pitchside microphones picked up every shout, scream, and thud of the ball, creating a surreal atmosphere.

Some of the measures taken to ensure a safe return to play included:

  • Players were tested the day before matches.
  • Teams travelled to matches in three buses for social distancing.
  • Players entered pitches separately.
  • No handshakes were allowed.

The Bundesliga's unique restart was broadcast to a potential television audience of one billion, with the league's return serving as a model for other top European leagues.

Photos from the matches showed players and staff wearing masks, balls being disinfected, and empty stands, highlighting the unprecedented measures taken to ensure a safe return to play.
