KTN Accused Of Stealing From An International Documentary

Published on May 16, 2020

The filmmakers behind the acclaimed documentary 'The Letter' are accusing Kenya Network News (KTN) of intellectual property theft. The team claims that KTN used their poster image for a COVID-awareness campaign without permission.

The Letter, a documentary that has gained international recognition, tells the story of complex familial disputes and everyday class, religious, and education contestations in contemporary Kenya.

According to the filmmakers, KTN cropped their poster image and used it for a prime-time broadcast without requesting permission. The filmmakers' lawyer sent a cease and desist letter, but KTN ignored it, forcing the filmmakers to take legal action.

The filmmakers expressed disappointment and sadness at KTN's actions, stating that it is contradictory to use their image for a public good while ignoring their request for permission. They also highlighted the importance of consent in using private photos for commercial purposes.

The incident has brought attention to the issue of intellectual property theft in Kenya, with the filmmakers calling for support from creatives who have experienced similar treatment.
