On May 16, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta announced sustained efforts to curb the spread of coronavirus in Kenya, including the extension of containment orders in four counties.
As part of the measures outlined by the National Emergency Response Committee, chaired by Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, a cessation of movement order in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kilifi, and Mandera counties will remain in force for an additional 21 days.
The nationwide dusk-to-dawn curfew was also extended to June 6, with President Kenyatta urging Kenyans to adhere to measures put in place to stop the disease.
At the time, 22 counties had registered COVID-19 cases, with 481 patients undergoing treatment in government isolation centres, and 50 Kenyans having lost their lives to the disease.
