As Kenya grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Education Ministry is facing significant challenges in reopening schools. On May 15, 2020, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha inspected the construction of Ruiru Girls and Boys schools in Kiambu County, where he emphasized the need for a clear plan to ensure social distancing and hygiene guidelines are adhered to.

Magoha stated that schools will be expected to maintain social distancing and hygiene protocols, particularly in areas where students tend to be indisciplined or require guidance. He also called on parents to educate their children on the importance of observing Health Ministry protocols on COVID-19.

The CS highlighted the need for constant flowing water in schools to maintain hygiene among students, particularly in urban and rural areas. He noted that the current setup, where students are packed into small spaces, is not ideal and may need to be reconsidered.

The Ministry has established a ten-member Covid-19 national education response committee, chaired by Sarah Ruto, to evaluate possibilities on how soon schools can reopen. Magoha assured that no institution has been sidelined, despite concerns over the committee's constitution.

As the country considers reopening schools, the Education Ministry is working to address these challenges and ensure the safety of students and staff.
