On May 16, 2020, the government announced plans to terminate and re-advertise contracts for the construction of at least two technical and vocational colleges in Wajir and Lamu.

According to documents submitted to the National Assembly Committee on Education, the Education Cabinet Secretary, Prof George Magoha, stated that a team from the State Department of Public Works is assessing the status of the construction of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centers in Wajir and Lamu.

Prof Magoha revealed that the Wajir TVC was 75% complete before it was abandoned due to insecurity challenges and lack of funding, while Lamu Mpeketoni was abandoned at 55% completion after the contractor abandoned the site due to insecurity.

The construction of Wajir TVC was valued at 82.3 million shillings, while Lamu Mpeketoni was estimated to cost 54.8 million shillings.

The areas have been experiencing a rise in terror-related attacks in recent months, with almost a dozen communication masts destroyed.
