Published on May 16, 2020, a second Kenya Airways chartered flight carrying Kenyans stranded in the UK due to Covid-19 lockdowns landed safely at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Saturday morning.
The flight, which departed from London's Heathrow Airport on Friday afternoon, was available on a first-come-first-served basis, according to Kenya's High Commissioner to the UK, Manoah Esipisu.
Passengers paid up to Sh279,000 for a one-way business class ticket, nearly double the amount paid by those who were evacuated on May 4.
Kenya Airways explained that the price difference was due to the first flight ferrying cargo to and from the UK, which helped balance out the operating costs.
"There is a difference in price and this is because the flight on May 4 was ferrying cargo to and from the United Kingdom. It was, therefore, possible to balance out the operating costs between cargo and passenger services," Kenya Airways said.
On May 4, Kenya Airways flew in 84 Kenyans who had been stranded in Britain for Sh53,495, making it the most costly chartered service of all the evacuation missions offered to Kenyans.
