Kenya's Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) is determined to hold co-curricular activities, including the East Africa secondary school games, despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to KSSSA chairman Peter Orero, the association has asked the Ministry of Education to ensure all sports events in the 2020 calendar are fulfilled when normalcy returns.
Orero emphasized that sports is a vital part of education, providing a foundation for talented students to develop their skills and potentially become successful athletes.
He cited the examples of renowned Kenyan athletes such as Eliud Kipchoge, David Rudisha, Victor Wanyama, and Paul Bitok, who all passed through the co-curricular activities in Kenya's school system.
Orero also expressed hope that secondary school games will continue from where they were stopped when schools reopen, and that students will follow health directives from the Ministry of Health to keep safe and contain the spread of coronavirus.
Uganda's Secondary Schools Sports Association Secretary Christopher Mugisha has also announced plans to change the country's qualification system to ensure the federation uses the shortest time possible to conclude the games disrupted by coronavirus.
