As the country grapples with the economic impact of Covid-19, a landlord in Eldoret has taken a compassionate approach by waiving rent for his tenants for three months.
Paul Waweru, the proprietor of Ndupawa Resort in Eldoret, made the announcement, stating that his business would suffer losses but his tenants would suffer more if he were to demand rent during this challenging period.
Waweru noted that some of his tenants are employees who have been retrenched or have no jobs at the moment, and soliciting rent from them would be unfair.
Sheila Wamboi, a tenant who operates a salon and cosmetic shop in the building, expressed her gratitude for Waweru's magnanimity, stating that her business was no longer earning her much income and she could no longer pay her bills.
Collins Wekesa, another tenant who works as a trader at Eldoret Market, welcomed the move, saying it gladdened his heart since his business was accruing losses.
Waweru urged other landlords to follow his example by going easy on tenants, citing a recent call by President Uhuru Kenyatta for landlords to be considerate of tenants affected by the shut-down of businesses due to Covid-19.
