As the 21-day nationwide curfew draws to a close, Kenyans will have to wait until Saturday to know if it will be extended and what new measures will be outlined to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Health CAS Dr. Rashid Aman announced on Friday that significant developments have been made that will shape the government's decision on the extended curfew, which expires on Friday midnight.

“Measures timeline are approaching and there will be a substantive statement tomorrow (Saturday),” Dr. Aman said.

He praised communities in Old Town and Eastleigh estates for showing cooperation and turning up in large numbers for mass COVID-19 testing, which has helped break the transmission cycle.

Dr. Aman appealed to Kenyans to adhere to the measures, saying they are not easy but necessary to fight the virus.

On May 6, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe declared a cessation of movement into and out of Eastleigh and Old Town in Mombasa for 15 days, and ordered the closure of all markets and restaurants.

President Uhuru Kenyatta extended a nationwide curfew for 21 days on April 25, citing the prevailing health situation in the country.
