Friday, May 15, 2020, marked a day of confusion at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) as an internal memo by Airport Manager Abel Godo leaked, suggesting the imminent resumption of passenger flights.
However, the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has since denied any plans to resume passenger flight operations at the airport, citing the need for clarity and guidance from the Ministry of Transport on passenger services.
According to KAA Media Relations Officer Grace Odhiambo, the meeting that was supposed to take place on May 13 was postponed due to operational issues and was meant to put in place measures in case flight operations resume.
"We were supposed to have a meeting with the stakeholders but the meeting never took place. It was pushed to a later date due to operational issues," Ms Odhiambo said.
Ms Odhiambo added that the measures being put in place are applicable to all airports to ensure safety amidst the coronavirus pandemic, including the installation of additional fumigation counters, signages, and the use of cashless systems.
International flights were suspended at midnight on March 25 after 15 Covid-19 cases were reported in the country, and many governments worldwide remain adamant on border and airspace closure as part of measures to contain the further spread of the virus.
