On May 15, 2020, the Ministry of Education in Kenya revealed its need for additional funding to support the country's Technical and Vocational Training colleges in the post-COVID-19 period.

The Ministry estimates that it will require Sh429 million to cover the costs of testing and providing protective kits for trainers, students, and staff.

According to documents presented to the Education Committee, the Ministry plans to test all trainers, trainees, and staff, provide face masks, soaps, sanitizers, and running water before resuming learning.

The Ministry of Health has set the cost of COVID-19 testing at Sh1,000 at public health facilities, but private hospitals charge between Sh4,000 and Sh10,000, depending on the location.

The Government ordered the closure of all basic and tertiary colleges in March after the country reported its first case of the pandemic, which has claimed 42 lives and infected 758 people.

The Ministry also requires an additional Sh3.8 billion to cater for the expected increase in student enrollment, which is projected to reach 300,000 students, up from the current 173,000.
