On May 15, 2020, a European Union-funded organisation launched a food-safety campaign to create awareness about measures that should be taken by handlers to curb the spread of diseases during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The campaign, run by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, focuses on fruits and vegetables as they are often consumed raw.
Target counties include Nairobi and Mombasa, which have recorded the highest number of Covid-19 cases, as well as Bungoma, Nakuru, Kajiado, Busia, Uasin Gishu, Machakos, Makueni, and Taita-Taveta.
Stefano Sedola, the chief technical adviser for MarkUp project, said, "Food handlers should wear personal protective equipment such as gloves and masks and embrace mobile transactions."
He added, "The new ways of handling food may require extra effort, but everyone must participate in the fight against the spread of Covid-19."
Shoppers are also being asked to wash reusable shopping bags and to sanitise kitchens.
Other partners in the campaign include the Fresh Produce Exporters Association of Kenya and the State Department of Trade, Ministry of Agriculture.
