Kenya's nationwide lockdown and curfew, which were extended for 21 days, are set to end on Saturday, May 16, 2020, as the country records 758 new COVID-19 cases and 42 fatalities.
According to the latest statistics, the number of COVID-19 cases in Nairobi and Mombasa, the two major hotspots, has increased significantly, with Eastleigh in Nairobi and Old Town in Mombasa being dubbed as core centres in the upsurge.
On May 6, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe declared a cessation of movement in the two estates for 15 days, closing all markets and restaurants in the areas. However, there has been a significant rise in COVID-19 cases reported from the borders, especially Namanga and Isebania.
Health CAS Mercy Mwangangi has recognized that significant effort is required to be marshalled at the borders to stop the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in Kenya.
