The Covid-19 pandemic has shaken the very foundation of families, leaving them to bear the brunt of the disease. As the world marks International Day of Families, the reality of the situation is stark.

Lockdowns, restrictions on movement, and social distancing have made it difficult for families to care for loved ones hospitalized or in isolation. The emotional toll is heavy on those who have lost their loved ones during this season, with many forced to endure undignified burials.

According to the United Nations, the pandemic has brought into sharp focus the importance of investing in social policies protecting the most vulnerable individuals and families. In Kenya, the government has acknowledged that families bear the brunt of the crisis, sheltering their members from harm, caring for out-of-school children, and continuing their work responsibilities.

As part of its efforts to cushion families from the pandemic, the government has released Ksh.8.7 billion for payment to beneficiaries enrolled in the Government cash transfer programmes for older persons, persons with severe disabilities, and orphaned and vulnerable children.

The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection has also developed the National Policy on Family Promotion and Protection, which is the only policy in Kenya to focus specifically on the concept of 'family' and its need to be supported by the State.

Additionally, a pilot targeting 108,199 households has been carried out in the four counties under lockdown, with each beneficiary receiving Ksh. 2000 every two weeks for the next three months.

Furthermore, a model centre for older persons has been set up in Mwea, Kirinyaga County, which will be used to host vulnerable older persons rescued from incidents of abuse, neglect, or abandonment.
