On Thursday, May 14, 2020, a devastating incident occurred in Kusumek village, Bureti sub-county of Kericho, where a secondary school student lost her life in a tragic accident.

A hole that Sharon Chepngeno, 18, was digging with her sister Faith Chebet caved in, burying the two alive. The incident occurred while their three younger siblings were collecting soil from the edges of the hole to plaster their parents' house.

Members of the public rushed to the scene after hearing the girls' screams and found the walls of the pit collapsed. Police officers and bystanders managed to retrieve the two teenagers and rushed them to AIC Litein hospital.

Unfortunately, Sharon succumbed to her injuries, while Faith was taken to Kapkatet sub-county hospital for specialized treatment. Faith, a Form Two student at Laboso Girls Secondary School, is currently admitted in a fair condition with injuries on both legs.

The body of the deceased is lying at AIC Litein mission hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem examination. Police have launched investigations into the occurrence.
