On May 15, 2020, Germany's top-flight soccer league, the Bundesliga, was cleared to restart this weekend, marking a significant milestone in the return of sports amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The decision comes as Germany reports 174,098 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 7,861 deaths, according to the latest figures.

Germany's Football Association (DFB) and league organizers (DFL) have worked closely to implement strict safety protocols to protect those involved in the matches.

Matches will be played behind closed doors, with only 322 spectators allowed to attend, split into three distinct zones: the stadium exterior and interior, and the stands.

Only 98 people, including players, coaches, and referees, will be allowed around the pitch, while 115 people, including journalists, hygiene staff, and emergency services, will be in the stands, and 109 more outside of that, consisting mainly of security guards.

DFL CEO Christian Seifert emphasized that the matches will feel different, but the organization is committed to providing the best possible sport within the given framework.

Players will be tested at least twice a week throughout the season, and teams will be isolated in seven-day training camps with strict safety protocols in place.

However, the decision to bring football back in Germany was dealt a further blow after two players from Dynamo Dresden tested positive for the coronavirus, resulting in a two-week quarantine for the entire team.
