As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect the world, Kenya's tourism industry is one of the hardest-hit sectors. However, the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife is working with different industry players to ensure that employees retain their jobs and that businesses remain resilient.

Principal Secretary for Tourism Safina Kwekwe Tsungu hosted an online tourism conference, 'COVID-19: Preparing for Recovery,' which brought together local and international tourism industry professionals to discuss measures for tourism industry recovery.

During the webinar, PS Tsungu emphasized the importance of collaboration between the government and industry players to ensure the sector's recovery. 'Our new normal is now, and as an industry, we must quickly embrace it to ensure that we get the best solutions for the challenges that may lay ahead,' she said.

The Ministry has put in place an open-door policy to enable consultations on options aimed at reviving the sector. PS Tsungu also mentioned that the Ministry is rooting for a tax deferment to enable entrepreneurs to inject money into their businesses.

Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) CEO Dr. Betty Radier noted that the destination's marketing strategy must change due to the travel behaviors among visitors as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. 'We must not look at the rear-view mirror, we must look ahead at the segments and sub-segments of the new traveler,' she said.

Google's Regional Director, Sub-Saharan Africa, Government Affairs & Public Policy Charles Murito emphasized the importance of embracing technology to reach clients and showcase offerings. 'The usage of internet has really spiked recently, with people having to spend more time at home, the key is to ensure that we are all in these spaces,' he said.
