On Thursday, May 14, 2020, a devastating incident occurred at Nyakoda beach, Lake Victoria, in Kisumu's Sangorota Nyakach sub-county, claiming the life of a 13-year-old boy.
The boy was bathing with his peers when the hippopotamus struck, dragging him into the deep waters.
A search operation was immediately launched, with Kenya Wildlife Service officers and local fishermen joining forces to locate the missing boy.
During the search, KWS rangers shot dead a hippopotamus, but unfortunately, it was too late to save the boy's life.
The body of the 13-year-old boy was retrieved on Friday morning, May 15, 2020, by the search team.
Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang Nyongo sent his condolences to the boy's family, urging the Kenya Wildlife Service to address the increasing cases of hippopotamus attacks along the shores of Lake Victoria.
