On May 15, 2020, the State announced a plan to offer a bi-weekly stipend to hundreds of thousands of poor households in Nairobi County, whose heads will receive Sh2,000 every two weeks for purchase of basic goods like food.

The allocation of a budget for this noble plan is commendable, but the selection of beneficiaries must be done in a transparent manner to prevent able-bodied individuals from sneaking in through corrupt means.

Coronavirus has had a devastating impact on poor homes, with 92 percent of Nairobi County's low-income residents suffering reduced incomes, forcing them to cut back on essential purchases, including food.

A recent survey by Tifa Research revealed the stark reality of the economic impact of the curfew, closure of businesses, and travel restrictions on the capital's most vulnerable populace.
