On May 15, 2020, Lean Energy Solutions, an alternative fuels firm, marked a significant expansion in its cooking fuel products by importing a Sh50 million fuel-pellets making machine from Sweden.

The machine, installed at the firm's Maai Mahiu premises, will be used to convert coffee husks, wood, and sugar cane waste into pellets for cooking.

According to managing director Dinesh Tembhekar, the new investment aims to introduce efficient cooking stoves to the Kenyan market, both for use at home and in institutional kitchens.

Lean Energy Solutions had previously tested the efficient cooking stoves in a pilot project in Naivasha, where workers of a flower firm used cookstoves in their houses and another large jiko was sent to a local institution.

The pilot project proved the efficiency of the cookstoves in cooking while producing harmless fumes, reducing the risk of respiratory problems associated with carbon dioxide fumes generated by wood fuel and charcoal fires.

Mr. Tembhekar emphasized the affordability of the new cooking solution, stating, "It is an affordable way to address a serious problem facing many Kenyan families that experience respiratory problems from carbon dioxide fumes generated by wood fuel and charcoal fires. Some users even die after consuming the carbon dioxide fumes."
