On May 12, 2020, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko announced that he had drafted a new bill to be tabled before the city assembly for consideration. The bill aims to ensure the operationalisation of the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS), whose operations have been affected by wrangles between the Assembly and the executive.
The 51 Jubilee-allied MCAs, led by Assembly Majority Leader Abdi Guyo, threw their weight behind the resolve. They vowed to ensure the new bill sails through the legislative process in record time to fund the NMS.
According to Guyo, the MCAs had sought the input of the NMS on the new bill to better address their concerns. He also extended an olive branch to unnamed MCAs who threatened to delay the funding of the NMS by creating obstacles to meaningful talks.
Meanwhile, Guyo has urged the office of the Attorney General and the Solicitor General Kennedy Ogeto to ignore letters issued to his office by the former majority leader Charles Thuo and minority leader David Mberia, criticising the decision to annul the Supplementary Appropriations Bill, 2020.
