On May 14, 2020, Kenya's Ministry of Education revealed that it needs an additional Sh429 million to facilitate COVID-19 testing and provision of protective kits for trainers and students in the country's Technical and Vocational Training colleges.
The Ministry of Health had announced that COVID-19 testing would cost Sh1,000 at public health facilities, but the actual cost ranges from Sh4,000 to Sh10,000, depending on the location. Private hospitals charge even more.
Following the country's first COVID-19 case in March, the Government ordered all basic and tertiary colleges to shut down, resulting in 42 deaths and 758 infections.
The Ministry of Education also requires an additional Sh3.8 billion to accommodate the expected increase in student enrollment, which is projected to reach 300,000 students, up from the current 173,000.
