As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread, residents of Uthiru, Kiambu County, have shown remarkable solidarity by donating care packages to their neighbours in need.

Organised under the 'Donate a meal; Touch a life campaign', the initiative aimed to support households hardest hit by the restriction of movements that has dried up incomes and savings.

On May 14, 2020, residents of Uthiru raised Sh120,000 in cash and Sh60,000 worth of food donations, which were shared among 150 families. Each household received a package worth Sh1,000 consisting of essential items such as maize flour, wheat flour, rice, beans, sugar, cooking oil, soap, and face masks.

According to the drive's coordinator, John Kibaki, the success of the event was due to the multi-approach they adopted in sourcing for donations, including using messaging platforms, word of mouth, and door-to-door visits.

Mr. Andrew Munyaka, one of the organisers, expressed his gratitude to the residents for their generosity, saying, 'It's not about how wealthy one is, it's about how big your heart is in giving.'

The campaign's treasurer, Ms. Minnie Ngina, also thanked the residents for their donations and urged area politicians to step up and support residents who are struggling to get basic needs during these difficult times.
