On May 14, 2020, the board of Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) made a significant contribution to the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic by donating Sh2.3 million to the Covid-19 Emergency Fund.

Board chairman Dr. Simon Gicharu and CEO Peter Mbugua led the donation, which was accepted by interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i and Secretary Kennedy Kihara.

According to Dr. Gicharu, the funds were raised from employee contributions and forfeited allowances, with the board deciding to make its contribution by forfeiting their monthly honorarium in addition to their sitting allowances until the pandemic is controlled.

"This was raised from our staff contributions and forfeited allowances. We are happy to be part of this course," Dr. Gicharu said.

The donation is in line with the campaign initiated by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto, who announced they had voluntarily taken an 80 per cent pay cut. Other government officials, including Cabinet secretaries and principal secretaries, have also taken pay cuts to support the government's efforts to combat the disease.

Speaking on the donation, Matiang'i thanked the board and assured that the funds will be used prudently to help those affected by the pandemic.

Other government parastatals, including the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission and National Police Service Commission, have also contributed to the fund.
