Published on May 14, 2020, Nairobi — The ouster of Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen and Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika from their Senate leadership positions has sparked a legal battle.
Murkomen, the former Majority Leader, and Kihika, the former Majority Chief Whip, lost their positions on Tuesday after a formal communication was relayed to the House by Speaker Kenneth Lusaka.
They were replaced by West Pokot Senator Samuel Poghisio and Murang'a Senator Irungu Kang'ata, respectively, following a Jubilee-KANU coalition agreement.
The two senators have protested the manner in which they were stripped of their positions, claiming the move was political and did not follow the due process as required by law.
Their case against their removal is set to be heard before the Constitutional Division of the High Court.
The move is seen as part of Jubilee Party's efforts to curb the influence of Deputy President William Ruto, who has been open about his 2022 presidential ambitions.
Five senators, including Nominated Senators Millicent Omanga, Mary Seneta, Naomi Wako, Victor Prengei, and Iman Falhad, have been issued with 'Show Cause' letters for snubbing President Uhuru Kenyatta's Parliamentary Group meeting on Monday.
