As of May 14, 2020, residents of Old Town in Mombasa are struggling to access clean drinking water, a basic necessity that has become a luxury in the area.
According to Timberland Athman, a resident of Old Town, the water provided by the county government is salty and not suitable for human consumption.
"After we started protesting, they began bringing in water, but it's salty water, not fresh water," Athman said. "We asked if it's safe to drink, but they said no, it's only for cleaning and washing."
Despite the challenges, Athman commended the county government for its efforts in providing essential services, including food distribution.
However, some of the food items being distributed are not suitable for residents with certain health conditions, highlighting the need for more inclusive support.
The lockdown in Old Town was implemented by the government in response to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the area.
