On May 11, 2020, a 55-year-old man from Kagawet Village in Itembe Location, Bomet County, was admitted to Longisa County Referral Hospital for diabetes treatment. He passed away the following day.

Tests later revealed that the deceased had contracted COVID-19. His family members, a total of 16, were subsequently placed under mandatory quarantine at Kaplong Girls' High School.

The Ministry of Health has announced plans to require Kenyan hospitals to test patients for COVID-19 before admission, in a bid to protect frontline health workers and other patients.

As of the announcement, 34 Kenyan healthcare workers had contracted the virus while on duty, but none had died.
