On Wednesday, the Catholic Diocese of Embu, through its development arm Caritas, launched an Emergency Appeal and Contingency Plan to support those affected by floods and the Covid-19 pandemic in the region.

According to Bishop Paul Kariuki, the church will join hands with local and international sponsors to supply foodstuff and other essential items to those in dire need.

“Christians should take care of one another. We urge Christians and other well-wishers to join us in providing food and protective equipment against Covid-19 to the poor and to those affected by floods,” noted Bishop Kariuki.

Embu Public Health Director Rosaline Kaugi, who attended the launch, stated that Embu County has so far not recorded any cases of Covid-19 but remains vigilant in screening for high temperatures at the six main entry points into the county.

Since April 10, over 200,000 people have been screened, with 157 individuals who were quarantined on suspicion of being in contact with persons with the disease being released after testing negative.

Fr Alexander Mate, Caritas Director, called on well-wishers to donate food items generously to enable them reach as many people as possible, including those in far-flung areas.
