The Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) has marked a new chapter with the installation of its new Secretary General, Rev Robert Waihenya. The event took place during the church's 22nd general assembly, which was held online in Nairobi in line with COVID-19 regulations.

Rev Waihenya was installed by PCEA moderator Rt Reverend Julius Mwamba, who led the virtual ceremony from the church headquarters in Nairobi. Delegates from the 56 presbyteries that form the PCEA church watched the event unfold through a live stream.

Rev Waihenya takes over from Rev Peter Kania, whose term is set to expire in a year's time. During the same ceremony, the General Administrative Committee installed Rev Paul Mwangi Kariuki as the Deputy Secretary General, replacing Rev Alfred Mugendi Kanga after a four-year non-renewable term.

Rev Waihenya and Rev Kariuki were nominated by all 56 presbyteries of the PCEA church last December. Prior to his appointment, Rev Waihenya was the Director of Mission and Evangelism Department, while Rev Kariuki was the Parish Minister at Kamiti Parish and Ruiru Presbytery Moderator.

Speaking during the installation, Rt Reverend Julius Mwamba emphasized the importance of adhering to government directives on social distancing. He noted that the virtual ceremony was a necessary measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Rev Waihenya expressed his gratitude for the appointment and commitment to guiding millions of Presbyterians across East Africa. He acknowledged the enormity of the task ahead and pledged to work with the support of congregants and the guidance of God.

Rev Mwamba also highlighted the role of technology in facilitating the church's growth and mandate. He appealed to the government to work closely with the church in aid distribution to vulnerable members of the public, particularly in areas affected by floods and the COVID-19 pandemic.
