On May 13, 2020, Makueni County Executive Member (CEC) for Health Dr. Andrew Mulwa revealed that only one hotel in the county has met the government's regulations to operate normally.

Speaking at the Makueni Referral Hospital on behalf of the County Emergency Response Committee (CERC), Dr. Mulwa stated that out of 34 applications, only Savannah Hotel in Makindu has met all the necessary requirements.

According to Dr. Mulwa, hotels that have not met the conditions will continue to offer take-away services until they comply with the guidelines geared towards combating the coronavirus spread in the county.

The guidelines include testing all staff, having thermo-scanners to test the temperature of patrons, installing handwashing facilities, and ensuring people wear masks before entering the hotels.

Dr. Mulwa also reminded hotel owners that they can take their staff for testing at Machakos Level 5 hospital at a fee of Ksh 1,000 per person, which has been reviewed downwards from Ksh 4,000.

However, hotel owners are cautioned against taking their staff directly to the hospital for testing, but instead should report to the department of health who will then forward them to avoid congestion at the Level 5 hospital.
