Coronavirus May Never Go Away, WHO Warns

On May 13, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a warning that the coronavirus may never go away, and people will have to learn to live with it.

WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus and emergencies chief Michael Ryan made the statement during a briefing, citing the example of HIV, which has not gone away despite the availability of treatments.

According to Dr. Ryan, even with a vaccine, it would take a massive effort to eliminate the virus, noting that some illnesses such as measles still exist despite having vaccines.

Dr. Ghebreyesus emphasized that the trajectory of the pandemic is in the hands of individuals and governments, and that everyone should contribute to stop the spread of the virus.

He also warned that countries easing restrictions should still be on high alert to avoid a second wave of infections.

On the same day, Kenya reported 22 new cases of coronavirus, bringing the total number to 737, with four more deaths and 22 recoveries.
