On May 13, 2020, 13 employees of the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK) were intercepted at a roadside checkpoint in Nanyuki while traveling to their workplace without the necessary Covid-19 clearance.

The group, all Kenyans who work as mechanics and drivers, were isolated by health officials and security officers after their temperatures were checked.

Laikipia County Commissioner Daniel Nyameti explained that the employees were part of a group that was caught up when the cessation of movement in and out of Nairobi was announced by the president on April 6 as a containment measure to curb the spread of Covid-19.

‘The workers were required at the Nanyuki army camp to service some of the vehicles and machinery used by the British Army, and that’s why BATUK decided to ferry them to their facility here in Nanyuki,’ Nyameti said.

The employees will be monitored closely to ensure they observe quarantine regulations and do not mingle with other employees during the 14-day quarantine period.

As a precautionary measure, BATUK had temporarily withdrawn services from the country in March following the global coronavirus pandemic.
