On September 26, Nairobi will host the Continental Tour Gold meet, a much-needed boost for Kenyan athletics after the event was initially scheduled for May 2 but was postponed indefinitely due to Covid-19.
According to Athletics Kenya, eight of the 10 meetings initially planned will go ahead under the new dates, providing a much-needed kick-start to the season for Kenyan athletes.
With the new date set, athletes can now train with a particular target in mind, bringing an end to the quiet period in athletics circles where runners had to operate in the dark due to Covid-19.
However, the ball is now in Athletics Kenya's court to deliver a successful event, and the organization is determined to do so despite the coronavirus disruptions.
Planning meetings for the event have never stopped, and Athletics Kenya is working on a package that will be attractive to all, including adding more events to increase the number of participants.
The event will feature 18 gold events with a total prize purse of at least Sh21.3m ($200,000) on offer, a significant amount considering the effects of coronavirus at the time.
With the event set to be a major milestone in the lead-up to the Olympic Games next year, Athletics Kenya is urging its partners and sponsors to come on board and help return the sport to the track.
