On May 12, 2020, parents of students at Oshwal Academy in Mombasa took their concerns to the Mombasa High Court, protesting the school's demand for full fees by May 21, 2020, or risk their children being deregistered from the online learning system.
The court, led by Justice P.J. Otieno, suspended the current school term that commenced on April 4, 2020, arguing it is not the normal school term government anticipated. The order also stopped the school from broadcasting and conducting Virtual Learning Education (VLE) until the petition by the parents is heard and determined.
According to the parents, the school was charging full fees ranging from Sh48,000 for pre-primary school to Sh186,000 for the thirteenth year, plus additional transport charges (Sh16,500 to Sh22,000) and lunch services (Sh16,500 to Sh20,000) per term. The school offered a conditional fee rebate of Sh5,000 to Sh10,000.
Separately, parents of Aga Khan High School and Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa have questioned the fees charged for online classes through applications Zoom and Microsoft Team, citing concerns over exorbitant charges and malicious content.
