On May 13, 2020, the Kenyan government listed Namanga in Kajiado county as a high-risk zone for coronavirus after 25 cross-border truck drivers tested positive for the virus.
According to Health Chief Administrative Secretary Rashid Aman, 23 of the drivers were Tanzanian nationals, one was Ugandan, and the other was Rwandese.
Speaking on the measures to curb the spread of the virus, Dr. Aman said, "We have now classified Namanga as high risk based on Covid-19 positive cases detected at border crossing points."
He added that those who tested positive for the virus have been sent back home.
Namanga town is situated on the Kenyan-Tanzanian border, with the town lying in Kajiado county in Kenya and the Longido district in Tanzania.
Dr. Aman also hinted that the East African Community is considering setting up a mobile testing lab to run COVID-19 tests for cross-border truck drivers.
Kenya is expecting to receive two lab facilities from the EAC, which will be deployed at the Namanga border post.
