On May 6, the Kenyan government placed Eastleigh and Mombasa Old Town under a 15-day lockdown due to high coronavirus cases.

Since then, residents have protested, demanding relief food from the government.

Health Chief Administrative Secretary Rashid Aman has spoken out against traders who are taking advantage of the situation to hike commodity prices.

"These are hard times; many activities have been stopped, gainful economic activities are suffering, but these are sacrifices that each and every one of us must live in," Aman said.

Aman urged businesses to review their profit margins and reduce them to stand in solidarity with those affected.

"Even though you are not registering the profits you were used to, be more considerate as these are not normal times," he added.
