As of May 13, 2020, Eritrea had made significant progress in containing the COVID-19 pandemic, with only one active case reported by the Health Ministry.
According to Yemane Meskel, the government spokesman and Minister for Information, the country had successfully recovered 38 out of 39 confirmed cases, with the remaining patient still undergoing treatment.
"This important milestone should not induce complacency. The grave threat of the pandemic has not been eradicated. We are not out of the woods yet," Mr. Meskel cautioned, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance.
With a total of 39 cases reported, Eritrea's COVID-19 tally is the lowest in the region, and the country is on track to become Africa's first nation to be free from the virus.
However, officials face a daunting task in maintaining the country's COVID-19-free status, particularly given its interactions with neighboring countries, including Ethiopia, which has reported 261 cases.
