May 13, 2020 - The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that Africa could see coronavirus cases rise from thousands to 10 million within three to six months. In response, Africa's tech innovators have been developing digital solutions to meet the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic.
One such solution is Chipper Cash, a mobile payment platform that enables customers to send and receive money across the African continent at no fee. Developed in Silicon Valley by Ugandan Ham Serunjogi and Ghanaian Maijid Moujaled, Chipper Cash was launched in October 2018.
According to Serunjogi, the platform was inspired by the need to offer fast and cheap mobile payment solutions in Africa. "Our education and life experiences abroad drove us to think of ways we could leverage growing up on the continent to create a major impact, hence Chipper Cash was born," he noted.
Chipper Cash has taken off in Kenya, where mobile payment penetration is estimated at over 70%. The platform offers a payment solution that is targeted at people living and working across the African continent.
"Chipper Cash is enabling Africans to transfer and receive money across Africa in a fast, free and easy way right from their mobile phones. We hope to expand this untapped opportunity in Kenya and continue bringing Africa together, one transaction at a time," Serunjogi added.
So far, Chipper Cash has its foothold in Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Nigeria, and South Africa, with over 1 million downloads from the Android Play Store. The platform has also completed over 3 million transactions since its inception.
Customers in Kenya can transfer money of up to 2 million Kenyan Shillings per day or 15 million Kenyan Shillings per week. Chipper Cash is available on both Android and iOS mobile devices and offers several benefits, including free transactions, discounted airtime, and the ability to send money to anyone, regardless of their network.
