Published on May 13, 2020, a devastating flood has left over 5,000 people homeless in Tana River County, with acres of maturing crops along the river bank submerged.
Coast Regional Commissioner John Elungata toured the flood-hit areas to assess the destruction and displacement caused by the floods.
Elungata was accompanied by Area County Commissioner Oning'oi ole Sosio and Coast Development Authority (CDA) Managing Director Dr. Mohamed Keinan.
During the tour, Elungata urged residents to move to safer grounds, citing the risk of increased flooding due to heavy rains in the catchment areas.
He also supervised the distribution of food and non-food items to the displaced persons in Galole and Tana Delta sub-counties.
Elungata emphasized the importance of maintaining hygiene, social distancing, and wearing masks in public places to contain the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Area County Commissioner Oning'oi ole Sosio attributed the lack of fatalities to early flood alerts sounded by the national government.
A resident of Makere village, Aisha Ziebi, expressed frustration over the annual flooding, which displaces people and affects development in the region.
