On May 12, Portugal's Prime Minister Antonio Costa announced the suspension of the country's top flight due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the season is set to resume on June 4, according to the country's football league.
"We wish to guarantee stadiums are rigorously inspected and the professionals are tested. June 4 is the date when the 25th round of matches of Liga Portugal can resume," the league stated.
As part of the restart plan, players will have to pass coronavirus tests twice a week, and matches will be played in the fewest number of stadiums possible. Authorities will identify which grounds matches can be played in.
The announcement comes after several positive COVID-19 cases were reported in the Primeira Liga, including three cases at Vitoria Guimaraes and one case at Moreirense. At least eight players have tested positive for the virus.
Porto is currently top of the league, one point ahead of reigning champions Benfica, with Braga and Sporting Lisbon 13 and 15 points back respectively.
