On May 13, 2020, West Pokot County Commissioner Apollo Okello invited auditors to audit funds contributed towards landslide and floods victims in Nyarkulian, Parua, and Tamkal areas in West Pokot County.
The move comes after a section of leaders from the County alleged that Ksh 3 million could not be accounted for.
Okello asked the DCI, EACC, and the Auditor General to investigate the claims to establish if the funds were well utilized.
He stated that his office received ten million shillings from the Chinese government, which was supposed to resettle those displaced after the landslide that claimed over fifty lives.
Okello revealed that a total sum of Ksh 7,163,200 was paid to 223 families affected, and the remaining balance of Ksh 2,884,800 is still intact at KCB Bank.
He emphasized the need to audit the National and County Government as well as the Red Cross for accountability purposes.
Okello stated that the Kenya Red Cross requested over 7 million from his office to pay for the families affected, and he tasked his account clerks to make the payments.
The County Commissioner expressed disappointment that leaders incited locals and propagated falsehoods without seeking facts from the authorities concerned.
