Published on May 13, 2020, a collaborative effort between The Coca-Cola Foundation and Coca-Cola Beverages Africa – Kenya (CCBA) has provided Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) with Ksh 10 million to support health initiatives in the fight against Covid-19.
SHOFCO will utilize the funds to enhance hand hygiene and sanitation by providing water, soap, and sanitizers to residents in Kibera and Mukuru. The organization will also establish 70 handwashing stations at main entry points, staffed by volunteers who instruct people on proper handwashing techniques.
"We are providing a total of 70 handwashing stations in Kibera and Mukuru, which are located at main entry points and staffed by volunteers who instruct people on how to wash their hands on entering and exiting the slums to keep the virus out," said Kennedy Odede, founder and CEO of SHOFCO.
The initiative also includes emergency food support to ensure that vulnerable families do not starve due to food shortages and price spikes caused by the pandemic. SHOFCO will distribute clean water twice a day through trucks to residents who lack access to basic hygiene facilities.
"Combating the spread of Covid-19 is a joint effort. We are pleased to have received support from The Foundation to implement our relief support initiatives," added Odede.
