As the global price of fuel continues to drop, Kenyans can expect a further reduction in fuel prices this month.
However, oil marketers had petitioned the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to maintain the current rates, citing low sales due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
But the government has rejected this request, stating that fuel pricing is guided by law and not at the discretion of fuel dealers.
According to Petroleum Principal Secretary Andrew Kamau, the review of maximum retail prices of petrol, diesel, and kerosene is done on the 14th of every month, and any changes would require a legal notice.
As a result of the pandemic, the government has imposed a daily dusk-to-dawn curfew and restricted movement into and out of four counties, including Nairobi and Mombasa, leading to a decrease in fuel demand.
Motorists in Nairobi have already seen a reduction in fuel prices, with super petrol now costing Sh92.87 per litre, down from Sh110.87 in March.
