On May 12, 2020, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) conducted a raid on a pharmacy in Nairobi's Shimo La Tewa Road area, uncovering a shocking case of illegal drug manufacturing.
The pharmacy, Mac's Pharmaceuticals Ltd, had been ordered by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board to cease all drug production for a period of 12 months, effective March 13, 2020. However, the company's management, including Director Khuram Chaudri, production managers Nadeem Janjua and Kumar Opendra, had other plans.
Acting on intelligence, the DCI officers raided the premises, where they found employees working in contempt of the Pharmacy and Poisons Board and the Public Order on state curfew. Normal production had been going on overnight from 6pm to 5am, when employees were released.
The raid resulted in the impounding of 150 boxes, each containing 5,000 Cofrid tablets, and 117 tins, each with 1000 Fenamine tablets. The 19 employees found at the site during the operation will be charged for breaching the state curfew directives.
The DCI's actions serve as a reminder of the importance of adhering to regulations and respecting the law, even in the face of economic pressures.
