On May 13, 2020, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni expressed concerns about holding the country's presidential elections in early 2021, as scheduled, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Museveni, who is expected to contest for a sixth term in office, 'To have elections when the virus is still there… it will be madness.'

Uganda has reported 121 coronavirus infections and no deaths so far, prompting the government to impose strict measures to curb the spread of the virus, including suspending public and private transport, closing borders, and urging citizens to stay at home.

President Museveni, 75, has ruled Uganda since 1986 and is expected to face competition from veteran opposition leader Kiiza Besigye and pop star turned lawmaker Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, in the elections.
