Published on May 13, 2020, a devastating mudslide hit the border of West Pokot and Elgeyo Marakwet counties, displacing over 4,000 people and claiming four lives.
Just a few weeks later, another landslide occurred in Muino, West Pokot County, leaving 40 families homeless and damaging 200 acres of cultivated land.
Nancy Emanuel, a mother of two, expressed her fears and desperation, saying, "We are living in fear. We ran out of our homes with nothing. No one thought of saving anything because it was too risky."
She added that the families are struggling to find food and sustenance in the camp, calling on the government and well-wishers to intervene.
Area chief Emanuel Chesta reported that the landslides left a trail of destruction, but fortunately, no one was killed or injured.
Residents in Chesogon, Sakata, and Chesta villages are at risk due to cracks appearing in nearby hills, with some residents refusing to move out of the danger zones.
Mr. Samson Lopolian urged the authorities to relocate those living in mountainous areas, even if it means doing so by force, to avoid a calamity.
