Published on May 12, 2020, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that 700 Kenyans have returned home from various countries where they were stranded due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Principal Secretary Macharia Kamau, the repatriation exercise was aimed at facilitating Kenyans caught up in lockdowns around the world to return home.

"We were very clear that the exercise was about helping stranded Kenyans," Kamau said.

The first batch of 232 Kenyans arrived in Nairobi from Mumbai, India, aboard a Kenya Airways flight last week.

Kenya has received international praise for its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the government's measures, including curfews, being commended by the international community.

As countries begin to consider relaxing lockdown restrictions, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will provide a window to the world and ensure that the decisions factor in the issues affecting Kenyans abroad.
